I’m Pearl and I’m an early retiree, currently taking care of my dad. I’m married with 2
children between us. I exercise daily, I bowl, am an avid reader, I love traveling,
concerts, cultural events and I love the lord. Some of my favorite genres of reading are
autobiographies and memoirs and of course poetry-Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes,
Amanda Gorman, just to name a few.
I chose poetry because this style of writing came easy for me. The words seemed to
flow as the thoughts formed in my mind and screamed to be written down. I write about
everything from God, love, jealousy, hatred, heartbreak, etc. I was asked by some
family members to write about certain subjects, and I did. The piece I am submitting to
you today was a request from my baby sister. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed
writing it. I have a published book of poetry out titled “Sand Grains”

Black Skin
Bold, Beautiful, Dreamy, who’s willing to experience my reality.
Don’t walk toward me trying to avoid what you see, open your eyes and look at me!
Why would a glance cause some to conjure up misinformation?
About one of the universes’ greatest creations
But oh! What a surprise!
When you realize
We are all human and created equal.
You see the sun spent a longer time kissing me.
While you constantly negate beauty you see.
Do you even know what the color-Black, looks like?
Go ahead, Ponder and wonder, Yeah, think about that!
If asked, I’d say, “I’m regal and elegant.
Bursting with knowledge, physical attributes, and intelligence.
Black skin is magnetic-its pull is positive as well as attractive.
To describe how I feel being in this skin
There are no words akin to -I’m winning!
While others will think, how can I cash in
Of this look, that’s now considered, high fashion.
Swallow your negative thoughts of slander.
Tone them down with hues of blues and amber.
Dispense your feelings of envy and jealousy.
Embrace all differences ever so gently.
For those who’ve dared and tasted this passion
Are still in wonderment and astonishment, a perfect reaction.
While still trying to define everlasting satisfaction
So, the next time our paths cross
Stay alert, not misinformed, confused, dazed or lost
Seek to be and try to understand.
Someone who can say, “I’m the better person.”
